“Everybody who knows what they’re doing in web development and web design is now pretty much on board [the web standards] train even though not everyone [...] shares exactly the same understanding.” Jeffrey Zeldman.
Anyone thinking of going into web design or development should watch this video of Jeffrey Zeldman, one of the people credited with founding web standards. Click here.
(Si – NOW I understand why you keep banging on about AA this and AA that! Jim)

I thought we all swore to keep Si’s AA meetings a secret.
Its the fourth emergency service mate, where would be without the AA
On a serious note though this is an excellent video which gives a brief insight into what I have to deal with on a day to day basis and a little understanding as to the amount of work that goes into a well built, standards compliant website.
I think he over-eggs the claim that we now work in a much more compliant virtual world, although it’s a lot better than the early days of the web, we still see on a regular basis two different style sheets for different browsers or IE specific hacks in CSS. I’m always harping on about how bad IE is but as an example there is a specific tag for adding code hacks to make your pages display the same in IE as in the other ’standards compliant’ browsers. The latest release of IE came with a ‘backwards compatibility’ button to view sites that have ‘broken’ in the latest release… surely if this browser release and its predecessor was ’standards compliant’ there would be no need for this to display the majority of well built websites. Its just a shame that the big boys of the software world won’t fall in line and make the web a better experience for everyone.
Viva Web Standards, respect to Zeldman’s neck and don’t forget to watch the 5th Most Popular Video of 2009…
Are the big boys not cooperating as you’d like them to, Si?
